Cervical screening, or the ‘smear test’, is a routine health check that identifies potentially harmful cells and changes on the cervix. Cervical screening is not a test for cancer, but this test identifies early changes and can reduce your risk of developing cervical cancer. It is important that you attend your screening when invited. Screening finds abnormal cells so they can be removed before they become cancer.

If you are a woman, or someone with a cervix, you will be invited for your cervical screening at regular intervals:

🔹If you’re aged 25-49, you’ll be invited every 3 years

🔹If you’re aged 50-64, you’ll be invited every 5 years

If you are due to have a cervical screening, you will receive a letter in the post, or we will send you an invitation to your mobile phone with a link to book an appointment.

For more information, please check the NHS website Cervical screening – NHS (www.nhs.uk)

The nurse or nurse associate is there to answer any questions or concerns that you may have before your appointment, so please talk to them if you are feeling nervous.

Why should I attend a smear test?

If you could reduce your risk of getting cervical cancer, would you? Well, the good news is that you can... Cervical cancer is largely preventable if you are screened regularly (every 3-5 years).

All women aged 25 to 64 who are registered with a GP are invited for cervical screening.

The test saves 5,000 lives a year in the UK. It takes only a few minutes, but the impact of cervical cancer can last a lifetime.

Please find further details of what to expect during your test: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/cervical-screening-support-for-people-who-find-it-hard-to-attend/cervical-screening-support-for-people-who-feel-anxious-about-attending

Trans and Non-Binary People

There is also useful advice for trans and non-binary people on attending cervical screening on the Cancer Research UK website. There is a dedicated service at 56 Dean Street for trans men and non-binary people.
